Secondary School Programme

Our Secondary School Programme provides young people with the opportunity to develop their handball skills, compete against other schools and take on leadership roles within the sport.

We deliver handball across Key Stages 3 and 4 through a structured and engaging approach that supports both participation and progression.

Inclusive Game Formats

As part of the continued development of handball in England, we deliver the game using both 5v5 and 7v7 formats.

The 5v5 format is used within Key Stage 3 and under-14 competition, creating a more inclusive and accessible version of the game. With fewer players on court, students have more opportunities to be involved in all aspects of play — including passing, shooting, defending and decision making. This format also supports teachers and staff in delivering handball with confidence, making it easier to introduce and sustain within schools.

As students progress into older age groups, they transition into the traditional 7v7 format, preparing them for competitive club and regional play.

Developing Young Leaders

As well as playing, we encourage young people to take on leadership roles. Our Young Leaders programme supports students to assist coaching sessions, officiate matches and help organise events — developing confidence and transferable skills beyond the classroom.

Competition Pathway

Students who show talent and enthusiasm can progress into our club pathway through Trafford Handball Club, where they can train and compete at regional and national level.
